Etiology of Alopecia Areata

Genetics granulomatous disorders – family history increases likelihood of association with autoimmune disease – (thyroid disease, Addison's disease, vitiligo) suggests an autoimmune origin; presence of lymphocytic infiltration in and around the anagen hair follicle is additional evidence. Alopecia Areata differs from other autoimmune diseases in that it does not result in complete loss of target organ function, but in a temporary change of hair follicle activity, it can return to normal. This suggests that the target may be controlling the growth factor or its receptor.

Microorganism, neurogenic stimuli, emotional stress, and poor coping skills have been identified as potential causes or triggers.

Signs and symptoms of Alopecia Areata

Clinical presentation varies from recurrent, small round patch of hair loss to chronic, total nonscarring loss of hair from the scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, nose, beard and body, spontaneous remissions can be seen.

Alopecia Areata can be psychologically painful. The hair follicle changes from anagen hair to dystrophic anagen, catagen or telogen phase hair due to an unknown trigger.

Nail pitting can occur. A higher incidence of association with other autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis and vitiligo have been reported.
